Chapter Sixteen

Running his hand over his smooth skull, Luigi Putelli admired his new look in the full-length mirror. On his way through Paris, he'd picked up an expensive suit and tie, as well as the new head shave. His dome had always been covered with dark hair, with the exception of when he'd joined the Foreign Legion. Now that he was bald, he appeared more sinister and his eyes even seemed a deeper black. He wondered if he shouldn't have shaved his head since he didn't want to frighten the woman and child that Corban sent him to protect.

No, he had to do it. It was his new look, the new Luigi that no one would recognize. Anyone near him would be safer because he looked different.

Passing through Paris on his way to the States had been very daring, but necessary. His caches of gear were primarily in Naples and Rome, but he had drop-spots elsewhere that weren't as hot. As Corban had back doors into his intelligence mainframes, Luigi had back doors into the DGSE, his old espionage agency. Borrowing Corban's identity had served him well for traveling through second-rate countries, but if he was to go to the U.S., or someday to England or Israel, his identifications needed to match him flawlessly. Thus, he generated brand new IDs, some with hair, some without. And while he was in Paris, he logged into his old service file and exchanged his fingerprints, DNA, and dental records with a dead man's records.

Luigi also purchased a new small wardrobe and a number of gadgets to fill Corban's requests more fully. Corban had forbid him to kill any longer, so Luigi required a completely new arsenal, but no less effective. Among other items, he traded his poisonous, deadly gum for gum that emitted a sleeping toxin.

Now, as he stood in front of the mirror, Luigi tightened his belt a notch and held his head up a little higher. Yes, he was a new man; he was a good guy now.

He just hoped changing his intentions in life was as easy as changing his wardrobe.

For a few of his new IDs, he had kept Corban's suggestion that Luigi should be Canadian, since his first language was French and his English still carried a little accent. But instead of Montreal, he chose Ottawa to call home. Luigi slipped through customs into Canada without a second glance. Then, wasting no time, he flew into New York City.

Though he'd been to the City several times, the rushed congestion in the streets still bothered him every time. Yet, he was one to blend in, as he had at the mosque in Lebanon, and in no time, he had assumed the role of a real estate developer interested in several Queens' estates. Luigi rented a vehicle and drove into Forest Hills. He had read the online information on houses for sale in the primarily Jewish neighborhood, so he knew the mindset of the neighbors and the resources they had. Such information was important to his cover as an outsider.
